DAILY DRAWINGS: Drawing No. 1
/I have decided to develop a habit - or, routine - of drawing in my notebook for one hour a day. I’m adding this to my other “healthy Betsy” daily routines, which are meditating and exercise. Drawing is the foundation of what I do, and it’s important that I flex that muscle every day. And considering that I am knee-deep in an exploration phase, where my very illustration style is in flux, I think this will be a good way to ground myself. I may even discover something through these daily sketches.
These drawings will be done in pen, in one dedicated book. I tend to leave a lot of space in my notebooks, and I am interested to see what happens when I get more compact. I will have no subjects in mind, I’m just going to freestyle. Not everything that comes out of my hand will be good… and that’s ok. And good practice for me, because as a perfectionist, I get discouraged immediately if I don’t do it perfectly the first time. So in an effort to loosen up, there are no rules to my daily drawings.
I was inspired by an illustrator in Brooklyn, Fran Meneses, whose vlog I stumbled upon a few days ago. She is a beautiful, hot mess, and that in itself inspired me. I am quite insecure these days, but trying to find my footing and not letting this uncomfortable period influence my happiness too much or discourage me from reaching my goals. And watching other people’s processes helps me too, because although I have been making pictures my whole life, there are a lot of blind spots and getting other professional illustrators’ perspectives helps a lot.
So, I commit to sketching and posting what ever I make once a day, indefinitely. Maybe I’ll start with a 30 day challenge. My intention is to spend an hour every day sketching, but I will factor in the possibility that some days I will only get a chance to do something quick.
